Your friends shape your health, beliefs, and habits more than you realize. Here's how to assess your circle and build relationships that actually support your growth.
This has been a current project of mine. I especially liked the book Platonic by Marisa G Franco, and even read it with a friend. Appreciate this candid self-study. Great suggestions!
This was such a good reminder that I need to do periodic audits of the people I surround myself with lol Jokes aside, I related to so much of what you said, especially now that I'm living in the U.S. versus when I’m in Italy. In the U.S., especially in cities like NYC or Miami, there’s this strong “you can do anything you set your mind to” energy. In Italy, on the other hand, people are so much more pessimistic and defeated when it comes to anything work-related (I don’t fully blame them--growing up there, I used to feel exactly the same way!). Great reflection, Jeremie!
Yeah, I completely understand what you are saying about the mindset. My experience in France is exactly what you described (we might come from different countries, but we ultimately have very similar ancestors and culture Latin background).
I know from your articles that they are parts of the slow lifestyle in Italy that you still love…
But could you see yourself moving back permanently?
I love going in vacations in France, enjoy the food, the slowness - the complaints 😆 - but I would personally really struggle to live there again I think because of those mindset differences.
“But not me. I made my own choices. I was my own person. Turns out I was full of shit.” this was exactly my experience. I used to think “you’re the average of the five people you surround yourself with” was just a lame platitude. But I’ve come to realize how true it actually is.
I’m in the process of doing a circle assessment myself. It’s confronting (and also a bit painful), but so important. Thank you for sharing your experience so openly.

Thank you Caterina.

Thank you for sharing that Nathalie. It can be painful for sure.
I’m curious, did something in particular push you to do this assessment?
