Reimagining Your Life: What If You Could Have Both The Job And The Place You Love?
✨ Have you ever stopped to ask yourself: Why do I live where I live? Or why do I work where I work?
These questions might seem unrelated at first, but when you dig deeper, you’ll see they’re often closely intertwined.
I believe that, for most people, their answers fall into one of two categories:
They live where they do because of a job opportunity.
They work where they do because it’s close to where they live.
Let’s unpack both scenarios:
🏙️ You follow a job opportunity:
You’ve studied or trained in a specific field, and naturally, you seek jobs in that industry. When hunting for roles, you might apply to companies in different cities—even ones you know little about. Eventually, you move to wherever you land a job that fits your career goals. Maybe you love this new location… or maybe not. If you don’t, you’re stuck choosing between staying for the job or leaving for a place you’d rather call home.
🏡 You stay where you are:
You’re attached to your current location—maybe because it’s where you grew up, or your family and friends are nearby. When job hunting, you only look for positions available in your area. But what if your industry isn’t big where you live? Or the roles available don’t quite match your goals? You might find yourself settling for a job you don’t really want, simply because it’s the best option nearby.
💡 Have you ever found yourself in one of these situations?
Chances are, you have. Most of us have been in one of these scenarios at some point in life—or maybe even both.
My Personal Journey
Over the years, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of both situations:
2011: I moved near Paris for my first job after graduating. I didn’t love the role, and I didn’t love the city either. ❌
2012: I decided to move to a place I loved: Aix-en-Provence in the South of France. But again, the job didn’t fully meet my expectations. ❌
2015: I landed a role I genuinely enjoyed, still in the South of France. My long daily commute wasn’t ideal, but I felt fulfilled and thought I’d finally found a balance. ✅
2017: My company offered me the chance to do the same job in Miami—a city I knew almost nothing about. I took the leap, and luckily, I ended up loving both the job and the city! ✅
As you can see, I’ve experienced it all—the ups and downs of moving for a job and choosing a job based on where I lived, each with its own outcomes.
🌍 Where does this leave us?
Here’s the thing: very few of us intentionally ask ourselves this question:
“Where can I live and do something that truly fulfills me?”
Many people settle for just one good outcome—living where they want or doing work they enjoy. Over time, this compromise can lead to frustration, burnout, or even resentment, affecting mental health and relationships.
The Power of Remote Work
🌐 This is why I’m such a big advocate of remote work. For generations, people had no choice but to work where they lived. Moving for a job was often out of reach for financial, cultural, or logistical reasons. (And let’s be real, it still is for many and I am well aware of my privileges.)
But today, remote work opens the door to a more intentional life. It allows you to live where you feel happiest while pursuing a career you genuinely enjoy—even if those two places are thousands of miles apart.
At the end of the day, life is about intentional choices. Whether it’s rethinking where you live, how you work, or both, it’s never too late to realign your life with what truly fulfills you. 🌍
Remote work might not be the answer for everyone, but it offers a powerful opportunity to rewrite the script. So, take a moment to ask yourself:
What truly matters to me—and how can I create a life that reflects that?
