I love this. I can totally relate and I’ve always found it unfortunate that it so often takes something as profound as grief or loss to really see how incredibly special life is. And even then (for me at least), that clarity ebbs and flows. Your writing is such a beautiful reminder of how lucky we are.
I can also relate to the ebbs and flows. I often joke that I like to be reminded of my privileges regularly by going somewhere new… it helps realize how good things are at home.
A simple one: water. We take it for granted everyday. Then once in a while, I go to a country where I don’t have easy access to drinking water, or hot water… or water at all…
Wow. Ending tonight feeling like a miracle wrapped in a miracle. I too “woke up” following loss and grief and it’s incredible the forces at play in life trying to lull me back to “sleep” and forget the fortune of this wild and precious life.
It’s funny you are using the terms “woke up” and “sleep”. I started book a few days ago… ‘Awareness’ by Anthony de Mello… and he uses the same language to highlight how we live our lives.
I have that book on my “to read” list! I sometimes wonder if the purpose of life is to continuously reawaken, with the forces that wake us being essential threads in the fabric of our own histories.
I see what you mean. I’m fairly aligned with this vision.
Society tends to see change as a bad thing (just look when old friends say to you “you’ve changed!”… it’s usually not a compliment)… but that’s to keep us stuck. Constantly waking up, changing, evolving… that’s what nature intended for life (all lives).
